~ 16th District Meals on Wheels Fund Raiser, April 10, 2010 ~
|
On a beautiful Saturday in April, many people could have spent time
enjoying the day doing something different, but the members of Bates 189
AFM along with OES Chapter #200 and brothers from across the state spent
the day helping raise money for Pickens County Meals on Wheels. The 1st
Annual Wings and Wheels for Meals was held April 10 at the Pickens County
Airport with the proceeds going to offset the cost of providing hot meals
to the homebound of Pickens County. The day was filled with fun
and fellowship among people from around the upstate and surrounding
communities. A surprise guest, Terry Bradshaw former quarterback for the
Pittsburg Steelers was among admirers at the event. Sam Wyche, former
coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and board member of the Pickens County
Meals on Wheels stopped by to commend volunteers on their efforts. Miss
Pickens and Miss Teen Pickens also greeted visitors and volunteers.
The 1st Annual Wings and Wheels for Meals displayed classic planes,
cars, and motorcycles. Helicopter and airplane rides were also a part of
the day’s festivities to raise money for Meals on Wheels. Thousands of
people enjoyed the events. The day flowed smoothly with assistance from
Deputies Chapman, Torres, and Kay along with the Pickens County Explorer
Team. The Pickens County Sheriff’s Department kept the day safe and
orderly for all who were in attendance.
Brother Andrew Fletcher
donated the use of his equipment so that Bates 189 AFM and friends could
prepare hamburger plates for event attendees. The proceeds from the sale
of the hamburger plates were donated to Pickens County Meals on Wheels. By
the end of the day, Bates 189 AFM had raised $2905 to donate to the worthy
cause. All involved were proud to have been able to be a part of giving
back to the community. Once again, Masons stretched forth to lend a
helping hand. Peace and harmony prevailed and thanks to all who
participated.
